Black Cherry Crush is a dance party with soul. Front woman and Pop Diva songstress Fysah Thomas leads this band with funk-soul flavored tunes, rock-heavy scorchers, and electro-pop bootie shakers. This newly formed quintet has been setting dance floors on fire and turning heads and ears all over the Northwest with their uniquely diverse sound and undeniable enthusiasm. Caleb Arnold- from the Seattle Show Gal put it best with his review
“Black Cherry Crush is seriously sexy. I have a total heart-on for soul sister Fysah Thomas who takes the soul vibe to a whole new level with sultry voice and electro-funk. If she isn’t hot enough, her band lays on the electronic R&B funk/fusion thick with builds, well written chorus and bridges, and an almost down-tempo style to their groove. They are due to release an EP sometime in December and will definitely be adding some funk-nectar to The Nectar on Friday”.
Black Cherry Crush is NOT your typical indie garage band, fueled by the ferocity of funk with a soulful pop edge, Black Cherry Crush was founded by vocalist Fysah Thomas, bassist Harry Wirth and guitarist Jakael Tristram who met and became close friends while working together in the legendary Seattle cover band Hit Explosion. While the trio already had a working relationship, in the spring of 2008 they began getting together to write songs and collaborate idea’s but their new project didn’t fall into place until they teamed up with producer Steven Scalfati and released their debut single “Dancing in the Moonlight.” Adopting the name Black Cherry Crush, the trio later added drums (Ernest Pumphrey) and the keys of Alex Chadsey and started playing out in late 2009. By 2010 Black Cherry Crush ventured into the studio to record a 6 song EP. After a cascade of local success and appreciation for their single Black Cherry Crush will be riding the momentum til the release of their debut EP “Cherry Pop” scheduled to drop just shy of 2011.
Black Cherry Crush’s influences include positive energy, friendship, a love of music and a heavy dose of 80s nostalgia as well as artists like The Eurythmics, SOS Band, The Noisettes, Diana Ross, Fleetwood Mac, The Cars, David Bowie, The Police, The Rolling Stones, Prince, Nirvana, Hall and Oates, No Doubt, MJ, Smashing Pumpkins, Whitney Houston, Run DMC, The Hellacopters, Tina Turner, Blondie, Daft Punk, MGMT, The Pretenders, Sly and the Family Stone, Stevie Wonder, The Ramones, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, The Cure, The Faint and many more.
Black Cherry Crush has fixated on creating music that points forward, escaping the constraints of traditional Funk/ Soul music in favor of less chartered (electronic) aural waters. Fusing Pop/Funk urgency with the gadgetry of technology, they are changing the landscape of the underground. As Black Cherry Crush’s unique sound and artistry continue to mature, the compelling new Funk interpretation proves that Black Cherry Crush are truly the rock band of the new millennium.
